Schwing America associates took time out from World of Concrete this year to honor Gary Nichols with the “Tom Anderson Lifetime Achievement Award,” the company’s top award acknowledging a person’s outstanding contributions to Schwing and the concrete pumping industry.
Tom O’Malley, Schwing senior vice president for sales and marketing, presented the award, citing the many achievements made by Nichols, including a history in concrete that spans more than five decades.
Putzmeister India, Inc. assisted in setting two Guinness World Records, one for Largest Continuous Concrete Pour and one for Most Concrete Continuously Poured in 24 Hours. The record-setting pour took place on the site of the Polavaram Project in Andhra Pradesh, continuously pouring 42,267 cubic yards of concrete for 24 hours.
Representatives from Schwing America took a break from this year’s highly-successful World of Concrete to acknowledge the achievements of three of its leading stationary pump dealers. At a reception held at Wynn Las Vegas for its customers and dealers on Monday, January 21, the company recognized the trio of outstanding performers.
While the 1980s rock band Quiet Riot declared they were “born to rock,” we like to say our concrete pumpers are “born to pump.” Thus, “Born to Pump” was the motto for ACPA’s annual cocktail party kicking off World of Concrete. With a rollicking rock-and-roll theme, the party was held Tuesday, January 22 at the Renaissance Las Vegas Hotel.
Safety is one of American Concrete Pumping Association’s (ACPA’s) highest priorities, and our goal is to foster a culture of safety at every level in the concrete pumping industry. Recognizing the finest examples of safety is one way we uphold our commitment to this mission. This year, we’re proud to name Bobby Blankenship as ACPA’s 2018 Safe Operator of the Year.
At World of Concrete 2019, the Concrete Pumping Association of Canada first announced their intentions to merge with the American Concrete Pumping Association and operate as an ACPA chapter while retaining its CPAC name. The merger will allow CPAC to benefit from ACPA’s resources developed over the past 45 years while combining its own resources into a unified organization.
The initial meeting at WOC was met with positive feedback, according to Daryl Dika, CPAC co-founder and board member and stakeholder with Reach Construction Services.
In a stunning, but not too surprising, blow to those of us in the concrete industry, last December the International Code Council (ICC) approved 14 of the 17 tall mass timber code change proposals. The approvals pave the way for the mass timber code change proposals to be included in the 2021 International Building Code (IBC).
As I write this column, political Washington is still coming to terms with the notion that Robert Mueller and his team did not find evidence of collusion between the Trump administration and the Russian government to influence the outcome of the 2016 presidential election. While the report itself has not been released to the public, it is becoming reasonable to assume that House impeachment proceedings are not in our immediate future.
