John Richard “Dick” O’Dell was born May 8, 1943, in Seward, Nebraska and passed away in Scottsdale, Arizona on July 18, 2018, at the age of 75 years, 2 months, 10 days. Dick was the son of John Robert and Nellie Marie (Kilzer) O’Dell. He was a 1961 graduate of Seward High School. On April 5, 1964, Dick was united in marriage to Karen

Putzmeister America, Inc. has hired Rob Demuth as head of service and training. In this role, Demuth is responsible for the service organization in North, Central and South America for Putzmeister distributors and customers, including field service technicians, the inside technical support team, training, warranty and the Putzmeister Service Centers.
Concrete Pump Supply is excited to announce the move into its new location in Mableton, Georgia. Conveniently located right inside the perimeter of I-285 in Atlanta, the new building features over 80,000 square feet of warehouse space which will be used to store the company’s expansive inventory of parts, system and Envirosac concrete washout bags, as well as house its pipe, concrete pump hose and primer production. This added space allows the firm to better serve customers across the concrete industry.
Schwing America announced the release of a video highlighting the unique features of the company’s Loop Belt truck-mounted telescopic conveyors. A worldwide designer, manufacturer and distributor of premium concrete production and handling equipment, Schwing has created the new video to introduce the company’s Loop Belt conveyor line to a wider customer base.
Putzmeister America, Inc. has received a silver award in the Midwest regional 2018 American Advertising Awards (ADDY). Putzmeister received the award in the Special Event Material category for its beautiful 2017 Holiday greeting card.
Putzmeister’s holiday greeting card reimagined the classic song, Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree by Brenda Lee, to include the Putzmeister 39Z-meter truck-mounted boom pump and other industry-related lyrics. The lyrics were placed inside a white card that unfolded to resemble a snowflake and included a Putzmeister keychain.
Operators will have a better understanding of the Schwing Vector Control system after attending the VEC Seminar October 22–23, 2018. “Vector offers so much for operator productivity, machine diagnostics and data for fleet management,” according to Jeff Popa, Schwing service training manager. “Owners will get the most out of this state-of-the-art system after they send their employees to this seminar.” The seminar will also include using Vector for setup and deployment of the company’s EASy one-sided outriggers using Vector controls.
Putzmeister America, Inc. has hired Justin Fagan as director of product management. In this role, Justin will focus on leveraging his skills and experiences in strategy development, product management and aftermarket services to support Putzmeister’s key initiatives and continuous improvement efforts.
Fagan joins Putzmeister after eight years with Komatsu Mining Corporation, where he held increasingly responsible positions in product management and aftermarket services. He began his career by serving in the U.S. Army as an infantry leader.
Autocar hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony at its new manufacturing plant in Center Point, Alabama on April 19, 2018. Governor Kay Ivey, Jefferson County commissioner Joe Knight and Center Point mayor Tom Henderson were in attendance at the event, along with Autocar chairman Andrew Taitz and president Jim Johnston.
Putzmeister America, Inc. has released a new app to make every customer an expert. The “Putzmeister Experts” app will provide customers with helpful videos and instructions for the company’s products.
In-depth knowledge on the functions of machines, guides for proper setup and operation, tips for maintenance and troubleshooting and information about accessories are all topics covered by the app.
Longtime Schwing employee Carl Quist has transitioned to a field service technician position serving the Midwest. He has served in multiple roles at the company since starting in 1989, when he was a mechanic in main assembly. From there he advanced to lead/ coordinator positions in assembly before joining the engineering team as an electrical designer in 2002.
Effective February 21, 2018, Putzmeister America, Inc. was successfully re-certified in safety from the Concrete Pump Manufacturers Association (CPMA). Putzmeister’s 30-, 40-, 50-, 60-meter class boom pumps, placing booms, BSA Large Line trailer pumps and Thom-Katt® trailer pumps have been awarded compliance by the CPMA.
The American Concrete Pumping Association took another step closer to a legislative victory for concrete pumpers. On April 17, Senators Richard Crapo, R-ID, and Sherrod Brown, D-OH, introduced S.2683, the Concrete Pump Tax Fairness Act, the companion bill to H.R.3292 introduced by Representatives Jason Smith, R-MO, and Earl Blumenauer. D-OR, last year. With bi-partisan bills in both chambers, ACPA has tackled a major hurdle.
It is shaping up to be an eventful political summer in Washington, D.C. Ordinarily, with the fall elections approaching, Congress books itself a long August “work period” to return home and get an early start on campaigning. Not this year. The GOP leadership has instead decided to keep the Senate in session to confirm federal judicial appointments, which could include filling the vacancy on the Supreme Court created by Justice Anthony Kennedy’s retirement.
A recent “special alert” to the ACPA membership informed members about increased scrutiny by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) on concrete pumping companies who have filed for refunds of federal fuel excise tax. In each instance, it appeared the concrete pumping company incorrectly applied for, and received, a refund of the federal fuel tax they paid based on a portion of fuel consumed while in PTO. While many states allow for a portion or percentage of state fuel tax to be refunded for off-road or PTO use, currently there is no such type of federal exemption allowable.
