Using the flux core welding process, Structural Fabrication Welders perform difficult and specialized welding requiring a high degree of skill and welding techniques. Welding involves a considerable number of parts and/or smaller more complicated weldments where alignment, dimensions and weld quality must conform to strict code, dimensions, general inspection, and test requirements. Structural Fabrication Welders plan and select welding procedures to obtain maximum weld strength and alignment on critical new or repair work. Structural Fabrication Welders fit and position parts and weld large booms, frames, bases, valves, etc. working from drawings and job layouts. Structural Fabricating Welders must have the ability to use a ruler, square, level, protractor, templates, and gages in addition to a thorough knowledge of welding techniques, material characteristics, and structural fundamentals.

A welding certificate or technical diploma required
Minimum of five years structural welding experience required
Experience operating a positioner and use of Flux Core and MIG weld wire
Advanced aptitude to read and interpret blueprints and weld specifications
Basic mathematical skills such as addition, subtraction, fractions and decimals
Ability to perform precise measurements using weld gages, two hole gages, tape measure, square, protractor, and digital levels
Basic computer skills required to accurately gather and input data from computer systems
Capability to lift 50 lbs with regularity and up to 70 lbs occasionally
Experience with jib cranes and sitting forklifts required

Operate equipment in a safe manner and practice safe work habits
Read, understand, and follow advanced job order specifications, blueprints, work instructions and procedures
Use a computer to access job information and accurately clock work transactions
Prepare all material surfaces to be welded ensuring that there is no loose or thick scale, slag, rust, moisture, grease, or other foreign matter
Remove rough spots from work pieces using portable grinders, hand files, or scrapers
Clean or degrease parts using a wire brush, portable grinder or chemical bath
Weld steel components with welding equipment as specified by procedures, layouts, blueprints, diagrams, work orders, or oral instructions
Use thorough knowledge of welding processes to understand how welds will react for strategic weld placement
Welds in the flat position operating a positioner to progress the weld
Monitor the fitting, burning and welding processes to avoid overheating of parts or warping, shrinking, distortion or expansion of material
Fill holes, cut, contour, and bevel metal plates and structural shapes to dimensions as specified by blueprints, layouts, work orders and templates
Examine work pieces for defects including use of weld gages or tape measures to ensure conformance with specifications
Checks grooves, angles or gap allowances using precision measuring equipment
Chip or grind off excess weld, slag, or spatter using hand scrapers, portable grinders, or arc-cutting equipment
Repair products by dismantling, straightening, reshaping, and reassembling parts as necessary
Operate and/or use forklifts, cranes, hoists, slings, grinders, cutting torches, hand tools, drills, punches, and instruments of measurements
Maintain a safe and clean working environment including complying with safety procedures, rules, and regulations
Ability to teach and mentor other welders
Willingness to cross train and perform the work of other job tasks when necessary
